Giving Time

GIVING TIME

The Church is one body, made of many parts, and we all have different gifts. We encourage everyone at our churches to get involved in one or more of our activities. You are welcome to try out any activity to find out if it’s a good fit for you.

Depending on your availability there are lots of ways to help out:

I would like to help on a Sunday Morning…

… I am inspired to see the younger members of the church learn more about God
  • Children’s Church – possibly the greatest impact you can have on the church of tomorrow is to help inspire the next generation to follow Jesus. In order to be relevant to different age groups, we need a large number of volunteers.
  • Crèche – this provides a means for parents of young toddlers and babies to be a part of the church. It is as much about blessing to the parents as the children.
… I like to talk to people and make them feel welcome
  • Welcome Team – a friendly welcome as you arrive at church, particularly if you are new, makes a massive difference.
  • Coffee Rota – serving someone a drink after the service with a friendly smile, and chatting to people helps knit our community together.
  • Driver – a practical and effective role, providing a means for some of the less mobile to get to church.
… I’m quite practical, and enjoy technology
  • Sound team – the sound technician is there to make sure that everyone can hear what is going on. The setup and controls are extensive but if you have a practical bent this is an interesting and manageable role.
  • Visual Team – there are two different, but related, roles here: the cameraman captures a video stream of the service, to be relayed onto the screens; the video operator controls what is seen on the screen – from song words, to Powerpoint to video.

I would like to help during a Weekday….

… I want to help the needy in a practical way
  • Community Meal – we serve the needy in the parish by providing both a meal and a social occasion. Cooks or cook’s helpers are badly needed, though getting alongside the clients is a great help too.
  • Food Bank – we provide food bags to those who are struggling to make ends meet. The tasks include keeping the bags stocked, and being on hand to distribute them.
… I am inspired to reach out to children
  • Children’s Outreach – one of the most effective ways of bringing a family into the church is through inspiring children. We run regular and one-off events, including holiday clubs which need helpers.
… I like to talk to people and make them feel welcome
  • Coffee Shop – the coffee shop is a popular contact point for the community. If you can welcome people, help prepare a drink or a snack and chat this could be for you.
  • Care Home Service – we run a short service at our local care homes regularly. This allows the residents to focus on Jesus and provides a friendly contact for them. We go in as a small group and the opportunities to help are wide.
  • Pastoral care – we are all called to care for one another, but we have a team who look to contact any in the church family who are sick, unwell, elderly or infirm – visiting and befriending them.
… I want to see young parents and carers finding out more about Jesus
  • Toddlers groups – this is a great way of introducing young families into the church. Many go on to join us on a Sunday and it is a great first contact.
… I want to provide practical help to ensure the building is fit for purpose
  • Maintenance – the buildings and grounds need regular maintenance to ensure that they remain welcoming and functional. This includes gardening, tidying/cleaning, small repairs, etc.
… I want to take the Church’s needs to God
  • Alpha prayer – without a backbone of prayer, the work of the church is not going to be effective. This is always true, and hence the prayer team behind Alpha is essential.
  • Prayer meetings – the powerhouse of the church. Come and be a part of a team which brings the needs of the church and the area before God, and listens to what God might be saying to us.
… I want to help the church to function smoothly
  • Office Administration – the church office helps to enable the church. Help could include administration, office work, photocopying etc.

I would like to help on a Weekday Evening….

… I am inspired to see the younger members of the church learn more about God
  • Youth Group – the Youth is very much the church of today. The meetings and activities are varied and the opportunities extensive.
… I want to see people finding out about Jesus
  • Alpha helper – Alpha allows people to explore the Christian faith, ask questions and share their point of view. This is often a key step in becoming a Christian and as a helper you can share in that journey.
… I like to talk to people and make them feel welcome
  • Alpha food – a key feature of the Alpha course is a meal which the participants sit down to and share before each session. This helps to build relationship and makes for a more intimate and sharing group. Helping with the cooking, serving and clearing up is a key way we can help Alpha to succeed.

I would like to help at a Weekend….

… I am inspired to see the younger members of the church learn more about God
  • Youth Service – The youth service provides a relevant framework for our youth to worship and find out more about God. Much of this is run by the youth themselves, but providing support is still important and necessary.
… I want to see people finding out about Jesus
  • Healing on the Streets – we regularly go out and talk to people, to find out about their needs, and to pray for and with them. This is a great way to see God in action, and just needs you to be willing to take that first step.
… I like to talk to people and make them feel welcome
  • Care Home service – we regularly run a short service at the local care home. This allows the residents to focus on Jesus and provides a friendly contact for them. We go in as a small group and the opportunities to help are wide.
  • Coffee Shop – the coffee shop runs regularly during the week. It is an opportunity for us to welcome people with a drink/snack and a chat.

These are just a few of the ways that you could serve at Christ Church, Anerley, or St Paul’s Hamlet Road.
If you would like to join in please talk to one of the Welcome Team on Sunday or contact the Church Office.
